On Friday, 14 May, KST’s Project Manager: Curriculum, Pumeza Tena, officially handed-over a life science laboratory to the educators of Sediba-Thuto Secondary School in the Fezile Dabi District in the Free State.
Tena facilitated a half-day training workshop for teachers to demonstrate the use of the laboratory equipment. This is to ensure that theoretical lessons are practically translated and that the equipment benefits both teaching and learning. Investing in the integration of ICT into the school curriculum, administration and learning culture is part of KST’s sustainability roadmap
Receiving the structure on behalf of the school, the principal, Mr Mokoena, enthusiastically thanked KST.
“I can assure you that this lab will produce future scientists,” he said. He added that as a community they would ensure that the infrastructure and equipment are protected.
KST’s District Manager, Nathan Pillay, said KST places community participation at the centre of its success.
“Our model not only benefits learners and educators, but the community at large. It is the local community’s parents and members that build these facilities and that contributes towards the upliftment of the local economy. The community members that work on the projects are extremely grateful for the employment opportunities they get during the construction period. Their construction skills are also improved through the skills transfer that happens on site,” Nathan said.
